I first learned about the work of the Northumberland Land Trust in 2005 when Dr. Doug Galt spoke to members of the Northumberland Probus Club and it sparked my interest in protecting our forest property. Setting up a Conservation Easement for our property was a very satisfying experience. It is crucial to obtain sound legal advice, and Paul Peterson, who was then a Director of NLT, was very helpful in this regard. I am very thankful that subsequent owners of the property have been appreciative of the trails and respectful of the Conservation Agreement. They in turn have been grateful for the support they have received from NLT in managing the forest area.

I was first introduced to the Outdoor Education Centre programme in the 1970’s, when Laurie Lawson invited my husband, Bill Goodwin, and me for a walk on his property, where the programme had been offered for several years. I thought the property was absolutely beautiful; at that time it was already unusual to see a large wooded area so close to town.

After Laurie’s death we purchased the land, and were able to support the school board programme for outdoor education that way for many years.

In the early 2000’s the Willow Beach Field Naturalists established the Northumberland Land Trust. The NLT accepted ownership of the property, (their first), and have maintained support for public outdoor education, mainly through the school programme, where parents are invited to come with their children, but also with invitations to the wider public to COME AND SEE! I salute the hard workers who look after this land, and encourage habitat for native species. This property is even more beautiful than when I first saw it.
